RESUMO

Thermal driven membrane distillation (MD) technology is a promising method for purifying & recovering various salty (especially high salty) or contaminated wastewaters with low-grade heat sources. However, the drawbacks of "high energy consumption" and "high cooling water consumption" pose special challenges for the future development of this technology. In this article, we report an innovative strategy called "in-situ heat transfer", which is based on the jacketed structure composed of hollow fiber membranes and capillary heat exchange tubes, to simplify the migration steps of condensation latent heat in MD heat recovery process. The results indicate that the novel heat recovery strategy exhibits higher growth rates both in the flux and gained output ratio (47.4 % and 173.1 %, respectively), and further reduces the system's dependence on cooling water. In sum, under the control of the "in-situ heat transfer" mechanism, the functional coupling of "vapor condensation (exothermic)" and "feed evaporation (endothermic)" in limited-domain space is an attractive alternative solution, because it eliminates the disadvantages of the imbalance between heat supply and demand in traditional heat recovery methods. Our research may facilitate the development of MD heat recovery modules for industrial applications, which will help to further achieve the goal of energy saving and emission reduction.

RESUMO

Strong seedling vigor is imperative to achieve stable seedling establishment and enhance the competitiveness against weeds in rice direct seeding. Shoot length (SL) is one of the important traits associated with seedling vigor in rice, but few genes for SL have been cloned so far. In the previous study, we identified two tightly linked and stably expressed QTLs for SL, qSL-1f and qSL-1d by genome-wide association study, and cloned the causal gene (LOC_Os01g68500) underlying qSL-1f. In the present study, we identify LOC_Os01g66100 (i.e. the semidwarf gene SD1), a well-known gene controlling plant height (PH) at the adult-plant stage, as the causal gene underlying qSL-1d through gene-based haplotype analysis and knockout transgenic verification. By measuring the phenotypes (SL and PH) of various haplotypes of the two genes and their knockout lines, we found SD1 and LOC_ Os01g68500 controlled both SL and PH, and worked in the same direction, which provided the directly genetic evidence for a positive correlation between SL and PH combined with the analysis of SL and PH in the diverse natural population. Moreover, the knockout transgenic experiments suggested that SD1 had a greater effect on PH compared with LOC_ Os01g68500, but no significant difference in the effect on SL. Further investigation of the pyramiding effects of SD1 and LOC_Os01g68500 based on their haplotype combinations suggested that SD1 may play a dominant role in controlling SL and PH when the two genes coexist. In this study, the effect of SD1 on SL at the seedling stage is validated. In total, two causal genes, SD1 and LOC_ Os01g68500, for SL are cloned in our studies, which controlled both SL and PH, and the suitable haplotypes of SD1 and LOC_ Os01g68500 are beneficial to achieve the desired SL and PH in different rice breeding objectives. These results provide a new clue to develop rice varieties for direct seeding and provide new genetic resources for molecular breeding of rice with suitable PH and strong seedling vigor.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Endovascular embolization has been widely applied in carotid artery aneurysm due to less trauma and simpler procedures than open surgery. Sudden cardiac arrest is a rare event that may cause severe consequences during endovascular embolization. Risk factors of perioperative cardiac arrest include cardiac surgery, younger age, comorbid conditions, and emergency surgery. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 62-year-old male patient had hypertension for 15 years and experienced sudden cardiac arrest of pulseless electrical activity during endovascular embolization. DIAGNOSES: He was diagnosed with a 3.5 × 2.5 mm aneurysm. INTERVENTIONS: Chest compression and effective interventions were given. OUTCOMES: He was resuscitated by cardiopulmonary resuscitation and systematic therapy. LESSONS: This case may provide experience in the management of sudden cardiac arrest during endovascular embolization of a carotid artery aneurysm.

RESUMO

IMPORTANCE: Phage therapy is gaining traction as an alternative to antibiotics due to the rise of multi-drug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. This study assessed the pharmacokinetics and safety of PA_LZ7, a phage targeting MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in mice. After intravenous administration, the phage showed an exponential decay in plasma and its concentration dropped significantly within 24 h for all dosage groups. Although there was a temporary increase in certain plasma cytokines and spleen weight at higher dosages, no significant toxicity was observed. Therefore, PA_LZ7 shows potential as an effective and safe candidate for future phage therapy against MDR P. aeruginosa infections.

RESUMO

Investigating habitat quality under different climate scenarios holds significant importance for sustainable land resource management and ecological conservation. In this study, considering Nanchang as a case study, a coupled patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) and system dynamics (SD) model was employed in the simulation and prediction of land usage under shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) and representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios. To assess the habitat quality in Nanchang from 2000 to 2020 and in 2030 under three diverse climate scenarios, we used the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model to analyze spatial and temporal changes. The findings indicate that the regions of forest land, cultivated land, and grassland in Nanchang City will dramatically decrease by 2030, the construction land will rapidly expand, and the fluctuations in the unutilized land and water area will be minimal. Additionally, the habitat quality declined from 2000 to 2020, and its spatial distributions changed. Zones having a high overall habitat quality were distributed in the mountains, hills, and lake areas, whereas those with relatively low quality were found in cultivated and urban areas. Under three climate scenarios, in 2030, the habitat quality index for Nanchang City will show a decreasing trend, mainly owing to areas with an index of 0.3-0.5 transitioning to <0.3. Considering each scenario, the degree of habitat degradation increased in the order SSP585>SSP245>SSP119. The findings of this study will inform high-quality development and biodiversity conservation in Nanchang City.

RESUMO

Phage therapy has shown great promise for the treatment of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. However, the lack of a thorough and organized understanding of phage-body interactions has limited its clinical application. Here, we administered different purified phages (Salmonella phage SE_SZW1, Acinetobacter phage AB_SZ6, and Pseudomonas phage PA_LZ7) intravenously to healthy animals (rats and monkeys) to evaluate the phage-induced host responses and phage pharmacokinetics with different intravenous (IV) doses in healthy animals. The plasma and the organs were sampled after different IV doses to determine the phage biodistribution, phage-induced cytokines, and antibodies. The potential side effects of phages on animals were assessed. A non-compartment model revealed that the plasma phage titer gradually decreased over time following a single dose. Repeated doses resulted in a 2-3 Log10 decline of the plasma phage titer at 5 min compared to the first dose, regardless of the type of phage administered in rats. Host innate immune responses were activated including splenic enlargement following repeated doses. Phage-specific neutralization antibodies in animals receiving phages were detected. Similar results were obtained from monkeys. In conclusion, the mammalian bodies were well-tolerant to the administered phages. The animal responses to the phages and the phage biodistribution profiles could have a significant impact on the efficacy of phage therapy.IMPORTANCEPhage therapy has demonstrated potential in addressing multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. However, an insufficient understanding of phage-host interactions has impeded its broader clinical application. In our study, specific phages were administered intravenously (IV) to both rats and monkeys to elucidate phage-host interactions and evaluate phage pharmacokinetics (PK). Results revealed that with successive IV administrations, there was a decrease in plasma phage concentrations. Concurrently, these administrations elicited both innate and adaptive immune responses in the subjects. Notably, the observed immune responses and PK profiles exhibited variation contingent upon the phage type and the mammalian host. Despite these variations, the tested mammals exhibited a favorable tolerance to the IV-administered phages. This underscores the significance of comprehending these interactions for the optimization of phage therapy outcomes.

RESUMO

Treatment of industrial thallium(Tl)-containing wastewater is crucial for mitigating environmental risks and health threats associated with this toxic metal. The incorporation of Mn oxides (MnOx) into the filtration system is a promising solution for efficient Tl(I) removal. However, further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanism behind MnOx-enhanced filtration and the rules of its stable operation. In this study, limestone, a cost-effective material, was selected as the filter media. Raw water with Mn(II), Tl(I), and other pollutants was prepared after a thorough investigation of actual industrial wastewater conditions. KMnO4 was added to induce the formation of MnO2 on limestone surfaces, while long-term operation led to enrichment of manganese oxidizing microorganisms (MnOM). Results revealed a dual mechanism. Firstly, most Mn(II) were oxidized by KMnO4 to form MnO2 attaching to limestone sands, and both Tl(I) and residual Mn(II) were adsorbed onto the newly formed MnO2. Subsequently, enzymes secreted by MnOM facilitated oxidation of remaining Mn(II), resulting in the generation of biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx) with numerous vacancies during long-term operation. The generated BioMnOx not only adsorbed Mn(II) and Tl(I) but also promoted their oxidation process. This approach offers an effective and sustainable method for removing both Mn(II) and Tl(I) from industrial wastewater, thereby addressing the challenges posed by thallium-contaminated effluents.

RESUMO

Although pervasive microplastics (MPs) pollution in terrestrial ecosystems invites increasing global concern, impact of MPs on soil microbial community assembly and ecosystem multifunctionality received relatively little attention. Here, we manipulated a mesocosm experiment to investigate how polyethylene MPs (PE MPs; 0, 1%, and 5%, w/w) influence ecosystem functions including plant production, soil quality, microbial community diversity and assembly, enzyme activities in carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling, and multifunctionality in the maize-soil continuum. Results showed that PE MPs exerted negligible effect on plant biomass (dry weight). The treatment of 5% PE MPs caused declines in the availability of soil water, C and P, whereas enhanced soil pH and C storage. The activity of C-cycling enzymes (α/ß-1, 4-glucosidase and ß-D-cellobiohydrolase) was promoted by 1% PE MPs, while that of ß-1, 4-glucosidase was inhibited by 5% PE MPs. The 5% PE MPs reduced the activity of N-cycling enzymes (protease and urease), whereas increased that of the P-cycling enzyme (alkaline phosphatase). The 5% PE MPs shifted soil microbial community composition, and increased the number of specialist species, microbial community stability and networks resistance. Moreover, PE MPs altered microbial community assembly, with 5% treatment decreasing dispersal limitation proportion (from 13.66% to 9.96%). Overall, ecosystem multifunctionality was improved by 1% concentration, while reduced by 5% concentration of PE MPs. The activity of α/ß-1, 4-glucosidase, urease and protease, and ammonium-N content were the most important predictors of ecosystem multifunctionality. These results underscore that PE MPs can alter soil microbial community assembly and ecosystem multifunctionality, and thus development and implementation of practicable solutions to control soil MPs pollution become increasingly imperative in sustainable agricultural production.

RESUMO

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with abundant resource and high safety are attracting intensive interest from both research and industry communities in meeting the ever-increasing energy demands. Despite the rapid advance of SIBs, it is difficult yet necessary to enhance the cycling and rate performance at anode due to the sluggish kinetics of "fat" Na+. This review provides an overview of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with a short ion diffusion pathway and a superior active sites exposure from the perspectives of synthesis, material chemistry, and structure engineering. We present the design principle of ideal carbon materials in SIBs. Moreover, we discuss the structure and chemistry regulations of different 2D materials to promote the efficient ion mass transfer and storage according to the different mechanisms of alloying, conversion, and insertion. Finally, we propose the remaining challenges and the possible solutions, in hope of guiding the future development of this booming field.

RESUMO

The 7075 aluminum alloy deep hole pipe finds extensive applications in the aerospace industry due to its remarkable attributes, such as high strength, exceptional wear resistance, and favorable mechanical properties. However, traditional boring processes for 7075 aluminum alloy deep hole pipes tend to generate elevated cutting forces, potentially leading to deformation issues in these deep holes. In response to these challenges, this study introduces a novel approach involving the use of a two-dimensional ultrasonic elliptical vibration tool. This tool features a single excitation asymmetric structure and aims to enhance the deep hole machining process in 7075 aluminum alloy. The research methodology involved several key steps. First, theoretical analysis and simulation were performed to study the motion trajectory of the cutting edge of the tool. Second, practical experiments were conducted comparing two-dimensional ultrasonic elliptical vibration boring with conventional boring for 7075 aluminum alloy deep hole pipes. The results demonstrate that, in contrast to conventional boring, two-dimensional ultrasonic vibration boring could achieve a maximum reduction of 54.1% and an average reduction of 50.4% in the roundness value of the deep holes. The impact of machining parameters on deep hole roundness is assessed through experimental analysis, leading to the determination of optimal processing parameters. In summary, this experimental research has a certain reference significance for the application of 7075 aluminum alloy deep hole parts in the aerospace field.

RESUMO

KEY MESSAGE: Genome-wide association mapping revealed a novel QTL for shoot length across multiple environments. Its causal gene, LOC_Os01g68500, was identified firstly through gene-based haplotype analysis, gene expression and knockout transgenic verification. Strong seedling vigor is an important breeding target for rice varieties used in direct seeding. Shoot length (SL) is one of the important traits associated with seedling vigor characterized by rapid growth of seedling, which enhance seedling emergence. Therefore, mining genes for SL and conducting molecular breeding help to develop varieties for direct seeding. However, few QTLs for SL have been fine mapped or cloned so far. In this study, a genome-wide association study of SL was performed in a diverse rice collection consisting of 391 accessions in two years, using phenotypes generated by different cultivation methods according to the production practice, and a total of twenty-four QTLs for SL were identified. Among them, the novel QTL qSL-1f on chromosome 1 could be stably detected across all three cultivation methods in the whole population and indica subpopulation. Through gene-based haplotype analysis of the annotated genes within the putative region of qSL-1f, and validated by gene expression and knockout transgenic experiments, LOC_Os01g68500 (i.e., Os01g0913100 in RAP-DB) was identified as the causal gene for SL, which has a single-base variation (C-to-A transversion) in its CDS region, resulting in the significant difference in SL of rice. LOC_Os01g68500 encodes a DUF538 (Domain of unknown function) containing protein, and the function of DUF538 protein gene on rice seedling growth is firstly reported in this study. These results provide a new clue for exploring the molecular mechanism regulating SL, and promising gene source for the molecular breeding in rice.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the retina and microvascular alterations with optical coherence tomography (OCT) or optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients with migraine with aura (MA) and migraine without aura (MO). Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched to find relevant literature on patients with MA or MO using OCT/OCTA devices. The eligible data were analyzed by Stata Software (version 15.0). Results: There were 16 studies identified, involving 379 eyes with MA, 583 eyes with MO, and 658 eyes of healthy controls. The thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) of patients with MA decreased significantly in most regions. The foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area and perimeter in MA patients significantly enlarged, while the perfusion density (PD) in the macular deep capillary plexus (mDCP) significantly decreased in the whole image and its subregions except for the fovea, with the PD in radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) decreasing inside the disk. Patients with MO demonstrated a significantly decreased thickness of pRNFL in most regions, and the FAZ parameters were significantly enlarged. No statistical significance was observed in the retina and microvascular features of patients with MA and MO. Conclusion: The eyes affected by MA and MO demonstrated significantly reduced thickness of pRNFL and enlarged FAZ. Patients with MA showed retinal microvascular impairments, including a decreased PD in mDCP. The OCT and OCTA could detect membrane morphology and circulation status in migraine and might provide the basis for the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with migraine. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Domestication from wild rice species to cultivated rice is a key milestone, which involved changes of many specific traits and the variations of the genetic systems. Among the AA-genome wild rice species, O. rufipogon and O. nivara, have many favorable genes and thought to be progenitors of O. sativa. RESULTS: In the present study, by using O. rufipogon and O. nivara as donors, the single segment substitution lines (SSSLs) have been developed in the background of the elite indica cultivar, HJX74. In the SSSLs population, 11 genes for 5 domestication traits, including tiller angle, spreading panicle, awn, seed shattering, and red pericarp, were identified and mapped on 5 chromosomes through substitution mapping. Herein, allelic variations of 7 genes were found through sequence alignment with the known genes, that is, TA7-RUF was allelic to PROG1, TA8-RUF was allelic to TIG1, SPR4-NIV was allelic to OsLG1, AN4-RUF was allelic to An-1, SH4-NIV was allelic to SH4, and both RC7-RUF and RC7-NIV were allelic to Rc. Meanwhile, 4 genes, TA11-NIV, SPR3-NIV, AN3-NIV, and AN4-NIV, were considered as the novel genes identified in these SSSLs, because of none known genes for the related domestication traits found in the chromosomal locations of them. CONCLUSION: The results indicated that the SSSLs would be precious germplasm resources for gene mining and utilization from wild rice species, and it laid the foundation for further analyses of the novel domestication genes to better understand the genetic basis in regulating the traits variation during domestication.

RESUMO

The process of plant water use is complex and changeable, which is affected by various factors. Exploring the sources and influencing factors of plant water use can provide reference for clarifying the mechanisms of forest water adaptation under climate change. We chosen the typical forest communities in the hilly region of Sou-thern China, Pinus massoniana and Quercus acutissima mixed forest as the research object. By analyzing water sources of plants in different seasons, the factors affecting the changes of water sources were explored in combination with soil water, precipitation, and plant roots. The results showed that water use characteristics of P. massoniana and Q. acutissima were similar and both mainly utilized 0-40 cm soil water during the dry season, with proportions of 60.0% and 66.6%. During the rainy season, as soil water content of deep layers increased, the main water sources of both gradually shifted towards deep soil. The similarity proportion indices of P. massoniana and Q. acutissima were above 60%, indicating that there was an obvious water competition between them. Root system of Q. acutissima had plasticity in water absorption, and played a dominant role in absorbing shallow water during the dry season. Water was the main driving factor for water source transformation of Q. acutissima and P. massoniana during the rainy season. Compared with P. massoniana, Q. acutissima was more sensitive to the changes of water sources. Under the background of future warming and drying, the competition between the two species for shallow water sources might be intensified. Those two species should be sparsely planted or thinned to optimize forest structure to cope with water stress.

RESUMO

As a global pollution, acid rain can significantly alter soil physicochemical and biochemical processes, but our knowledge of how acid rain affects soil enzyme activity is still limited. To quantify the overall magnitude and direction of the response of soil enzyme activity to acid rain, we conducted a linear mixed model-based meta-analysis of 40 articles. Our analysis revealed that acid rain decreased enzyme activity by an average of 4.87%. Soil dehydrogenase and protease activities were particularly sensitive to acid rain, with significant inhibitions observed. The effect of acid rain was moderated by acid rain intensity (i.e., H+ addition rate, total H+ added, and acid rain pH) and soil fraction (i.e., rhizosphere and bulk soil). Structural equation modelling further revealed that acid rain suppressed soil microbial biomass by acidifying the soil and that the reduction in microbial biomass directly led to the inhibition of enzyme activity in bulk soil. However, the enzyme activity in the rhizosphere soil was not affected by acid rain due to the rhizosphere effect, which was also not impacted by the decreased soil pH induced by acid rain in rhizosphere. Our study gives an insight into how bulk soil enzyme activity is impacted by acid rain and highlights the need to incorporate rhizosphere processes into acid rain-terrestrial ecosystem models.

RESUMO

IMPORTANCE: Salmonella infection is a significant threat to global public health, and the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance exacerbates the situation. Therefore, finding new and effective ways to combat this pathogen is essential. Phages are natural predators of bacteria and can be used as an alternative to antibiotics to kill specific bacteria, including drug-resistant strains. One significant limitation of using phages as antimicrobial agents is their low cellular uptake, which limits their effectiveness against intracellular bacterial infections. Therefore, finding ways to enhance phage uptake is crucial. Our study provides a straightforward strategy for displaying cell-penetrating peptides on non-model phages, offering a promising novel and effective therapeutic approach for treating intracellular and drug-resistant bacteria. This approach has the potential to address the global challenge of antibiotic resistance and improve public health outcomes.

RESUMO

Circular RNA (circRNA) is a class of noncoding RNA that is highly conserved and exhibit exceptional stability. Due to its function as a microRNA sponge, circRNA has gained significant attention as an essential biomarker and potential drug target in the pathogenesis of several cancers. Although many circRNAs have been identified to play a role in cancer resistance, traditional methods are time-consuming and expensive. In this context, computational methods offer a promising way to facilitate the discovery process. However, most existing prediction models focus on the association between circRNAs and drug resistance, without considering the corresponding disease-related information in the circRNA-drug resistance association. Incorporating disease-related information into the prediction of circRNA-drug resistance associations could potentially improve the efficiency and speed of discovering and developing circRNA-targeting drugs. We propose a computational framework, named GraphCDD, for predicting the association between circRNA and drug resistance. Our model utilizes data from three sources, namely circRNA, disease, and drug, to construct three similarity networks that represent the features of circRNA, disease, and drug, respectively. We utilize a multimodal graph neural network to acquire efficient representations of circRNAs, diseases, and drugs by integrating various types of information, and establish a predictive model. The experimental results have validated the effectiveness of our model and provided a promising method in predicting potential associations between circRNA and drug resistance. The source code and dataset of GraphCDD can be found at https://github.com/Ziqiang-Liu/GraphCDD.

RESUMO

Understanding the evolutionary forces in speciation is a central goal in evolutionary biology. Asian cultivated rice has two subspecies, indica and japonica, but the underlying mechanism of the partial reproductive isolation between them remains obscure. Here we show a presence-absence variation (PAV) at the Se locus functions as an indica-japonica reproductive barrier by causing hybrid sterility (HS) in indica-japonica crosses. The locus comprises two adjacent genes: ORF3 encodes a sporophytic pollen killer, whereas ORF4 protects pollen in a gametophytic manner. In F1 of indica-japonica crosses, pollen with the japonica haplotype, which lacks the sequence containing the protective ORF4, is aborted due to the pollen-killing effect of ORF3 from indica. Evolutionary analysis suggests ORF3 is a gene associated with the Asian cultivated rice species complex, and the PAV has contributed to the reproductive isolation between the two subspecies of Asian cultivated rice. Our analyses provide perspectives on rice inter-subspecies post-zygotic isolation, and will promote efforts to overcome reproductive barriers in indica-japonica hybrid rice breeding.

RESUMO

The intensity and frequency of droughts are projected to rise in recent years and adversely affect forests. Thus, information on plant water use and acclimation during and after droughts is crucial. This study used the stable isotope and thermal dissipation probes to detect the water-use adaptation of mixed forests to drought using a precipitation gradient control experiment in the field. The results showed that Platycladus orientalis and Quercus variabilis mainly absorbed stable water from deep soil layers during the drought (32.05% and 28.2%, respectively). The synergetic nocturnal sap flow in both species replenished the water loss, but P. orientalis experienced a greater decline in transpiration acclimation to drought. The transpiration of Q. variabilis remained high since it was mainly induced by radiation. After short-term exposure to drought, P. orientalis majorly obtained shallow soil water, confirming its sensitivity to shallow water. Contrarily, Q. variabilis mainly absorbed stable water from deep soil layers regardless of the soil water content. Therefore, these findings suggest that Q. variabilis cannot physiologically adjust to extreme drought events, possibly limiting their future distributions and altering the composition of boreal forests.

RESUMO

Older individuals with macular diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, experience central vision loss (CVL) due to degeneration of their photoreceptors and retinal cells. Patients with CVL may experience various vision impairments, including of visual acuity, fixation stability, contrast sensitivity, and stereoacuity. After CVL, most patients develop a preferred retinal locus outside the affected macular region, which serves as a new visual reference. In this review, we provide an overview of the visual function and impairment in individuals with CVL. In addition, the important role of biofeedback training on the visual function and activity of individuals with CVL is also reviewed. Accordingly, the location and development of the preferred retinal loci are discussed. Finally, this review discusses how to conduct biofeedback training to treat individuals with CVL.
